The Lock & Load Weightflifting Competition was a hugh success. Over 50 lifters competed in all weight and age divisions, and over 100 spectators showed up to watch the lifting. Bobby Sirkis and Spencer Arnold qualified for the Sr. Nationals in the 69kg and 77kg class. First time competing lifter Christina Raptis made a solid performance making 47kg snatch and 60kg C&J. After the meet the lifters had a cook out at Tom’s ranch house, just walking distance from the Van Alstyn Civic Center. The food was terrific and everyone wished Richard the Splinter Flemming a happy birthday. Congratulations to all who lifted at the Lock & Load and hope to see everyone at the Copperhead in October (Date to be Determined).

The gym was crowded on Sunday, as the Master lifters arrived for their 3:00 pm start time,
and the open lifters were just finishing up with their session. It was the day the Master
lifters would be trying to max out in the clean from the boxes. This being Gary Deal’s supreme
event in the gym, most eyes were on him as he was going to attempt a new PR.
Before the clean from the boxes took place, Darren Argabright was preparing to attempt a new
PR in the jerk from the boxes. He walked toward the weight and gripped the bar.
With headphones on, he pulled back away from the boxes and set
himself to attempt the jerk. It went up fast and easy, and he looked good for much more.
The “way to go” was shouted.
View Film It was now the Master Lifter’s turn to keep up the good work. Tom Witherspoon,
and Gary warmed up first, as Jed Harris and Jim Napier were a tad late.
Tom was the first to try for a PR. He had made 83 kg a few weeks before. He grabbed
the bar and pulled it as hard as he could, but the 85 kg weight was not to be that day.
Jed Missed at 75 kg but went back and started over and later made 72 kg for his best.
Jim tried 85 kg but missed, he also went back and started over and made the 85 kg
for his best.
Keith Miller was on the next platform, unbeknown to most, he was attempting to break
his total record. He did not need a record C&J to break his total record, but he
tried a PB in the Clean & Jerk anyway, and beat his old PR total. The jerks were
easy for Keith that day.
This day was one of the best for the Spoon Barbell Club, and Tom vows
to break his clean from the boxes record next time.
Recap:
Darren Argabright - 121 kg jerk from boxes
Gary Deal - 112.5 kg clean from boxes (The World Record C&J is 112 kg)
Keith Miller broke his clean & Jerk and total records for PB
Jed Harris - 72 kg clean from boxes
Jim Napier - 85 kg clean from boxes
